County Food Bank Grateful For Responses to Urgent Appeal For Donations

August 25 2009…..M.C.F.O.O.D.S., Middlesex County’s food distribution program serving more than 70 food pantries and soup kitchens recently made an urgent appeal to county residents and businesses asking them to organize food drives to meet the increased summer food demand. And the response has been immediate and effective.

Rutgers Against Hunger had collected food back in May, but is now holding an August food drive to help M.C.F.O.O.D.S. Middlesex County employees are also holding an August food drive, and two AFSCME locals are raising funds in order to purchase supermarket gift cards. M.C.F.O.O.D.S. also accepts supermarket gift cards.

In addition, United Way of Central Jersey, had worked with M.C.F.O.O.D.S., Piscataway Township and Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Services Inc. on a July food drive targeting selected Piscataway neighborhoods and monetary donations were accepted at the United Way of Central Jersey website (uwcj.org) totaling $1,147.00. These funds were turned into gift cards for M.C.F.O.O.D.S. The United Way website is still accepting monetary donations for M.C.F.O.O.D.S.

“We have always received an incredible amount of support from our community and corporate partners in these times of special need,” said Freeholder Blanquita B. Valenti, M.C.F.O.O.D.S. Freeholder Liaison. “And we are grateful for their responsiveness and generosity.”

For anyone interested in organizing a food drive, The Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services (M.C.F.O.O.D.S.) is seeking businesses, individuals, summer camps, clubs, athletic teams churches and organizations to donate items, sponsor a food drive or donate supermarket gift cards.

M.C.F.O.O.D.S. will provide collection containers, advertising flyers and posters and guidance to any group willing to hold a food drive. To sponsor a food drive or for more information contact Jennifer Apostol at 609-409-5033 or ja@mciauth.com.

Individuals who want to donate food can use the year-round collection boxes at Middlesex County libraries in East Brunswick, Edison, Metuchen, Milltown, Monroe, North Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Plainsboro, South Brunswick, South Plainfield, Spotswood and Woodbridge.
