August 1, 2008 -- East Brunswick, NJ..The first event to take place via a partnership of The First Tee Middlesex & Somerset Counties and the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) will be a golf camp at Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick, NJ, August 25-29, 2008.

The First Tee is a chapter of an international non-profit youth initiative that encourages young people of all ethnic and economic backgrounds to take part in character development through golf and education. The program develops life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. The First Tee and the MCIA, which operates Middlesex County golf courses, will be working together to promote life skills and golf at the Middlesex County golf courses.

Leonard J. Roseman, Chairman of the MCIA, said “We have wanted to open up the county golf courses to more opportunities for youth golf, and this partnership with The First Tee is a wonderful way to accomplish this. We are looking forward to working with The First Tee, and this inaugural camp at Tamarack is just the first step.”

The camp is open to youth ages 7 to 14 and will be held from 9 AM to 12 noon, Monday – Friday, August 25 – 29. Monday – Wednesday sessions will be devoted to golf fundamentals and life skills. Thursday will be a competition day with long drive, putting and chipping contests so that participants can show off their new skills. The Friday climax will be a nine-hole scramble tournament and awards ceremony. The cost for each participant is $200 for the week, and scholarships are available according to need.

Robert Valentino, Executive Director of The First Tee Middlesex & Somerset Counties commented “This camp will utilize Tamarack’s driving range, putting green, chipping green with one day on the course itself. Besides the training, we hope to have some surprise guests.” He continued, “Having this camp in late August will help kids learn the fundamentals so that they can get out on the golf course in the fall, and we expect that some of the participants might be ready to join their school golf teams.”
